eBay: Investor Group Reportedly Plans Bid For Skype

skype logoA group of VC and private equity investors are teaming up to make a bid to buy Skype from eBay (EBAY), according to TechCrunch.

The post reports that investors may include Andreesen Horowitz, the new fund recently launched by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, and Index Ventures, which was an early investor in Skype, plus one or more private equity firms.

Earlier this year, eBay announced plans to spin off Skype in an IPO in 2010. According to TechCrunch, eBay is asking for $2 billion or more for Skype.

Skype had 2008 revenue of $551 million, up 44% from 2007; eBay has previously projected it will top $1 billion in revenue in 2011.

In April, there were reports that Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis had approached private equity firms about a joint bid to buy back the company. A year earlier, TechCrunch reported that Google (GOOG) was holding talks about possibly acquiring Skype from eBay.

EBAY today is up 12 cents, or 0.5%, to $22.53.
